Frozen in time

With a temperature reading of around minus 11 outside, painting anything is not on most people's minds. It is a good time to start planning your painting projects for the year though, along with a budget for any professional work that you might need. Always get at least three quotes from 3 good companies. Remember that the College painter types will give a cheap price (maybe) but their work experience is limited to a few weeks if you are lucky. The problem is getting painters to show up and give a proper written estimate. Avoid cash jobs because it usually means no redress for you if the job is unsatisfactory. I usually go with a price that is in the middle somewhere unless you know the person and have dealt with them before.
With the new enviromentally friendly paints on the market, you may find that they don't perform as well as the old less friendly paints. Surface preparation is the most important thing and this is what costs the money. This is where a cheap paint job can come back and haunt you and cost you way too much anxiety later on.

Rain is good

So, you still want your stucco painted and it just rained. Stucco is the one surface that is good to have damp before you paint. It helps penetration and absorbtion of latex paint. Now, although paint companies market stucco paint as a seperate type of product, any good quality latex paint will do just fine. If you are painting a surface that has never been painted, then you can wet it down with a hose before you start work. This will also wash off any dust and dirt that might be hanging on the the surface.

Summer is not attending this year

All you exterior painting types are tired of waiting for a clear stretch of sunny weather, as am I.
I think we are going to fit all our outside painting into August and September. Some parts of a building can be finished in this weather, just leave wooden sills and areas that need need to dry before paint is applied.

Don't rush the paint job

Remember that exterior paint requires at least 10 degrees Celsius to adhere properly.
Also the surface has to be dry to prevent the paint from coming off when the sun heats the surface, creating steam from underlying dampness.

I'm already getting inquiries about painting exteriors, and hope the HST will not affect peoples decision to hire a paint contractor.
There are ways to negotiate around this if you can talk to your painter. Before the tax came in customers were paying 5% Gst on the labour and 12% on the paint and materials. That difference of 7% that the HST has put on a tradesmans bill works out to $70 on a $1000, this, remember is only on the labour cost, so it turns out that the amount is not that much and many painters will agree, like me, to share the cost of the tax increase. So if you pay, say, $3000 to repaint the exterior of your house, then the extra cost with HST will be on $2500 labour = $175. (assuming 25% of the bill is paint) Ask if you can share the extra cost and you will be surprised how many companies will agree.
Make sure you get three estimates for your job, and don't just go with the cheapest, it could be an expensive mistake. Look at all aspects of the contractors references and check to see who you think will give you the best job.

If the thought of repainting part of your home is akin to watching the pesky stuff dry, you should remember that we are all good at different things.
You don't have to be skilled at everything, in fact it's good to remind ourselves that we are all equally ignorant, but on different subjects.
Should we spend laborious hours trying to improve in area's where we lack?
Or just keep improving the skills we already have?
I believe the latter is the best course, that is why I still paint for a living.
There are many things I'm sort of good at, but a very few things I'm very good at.

Cold enough?

With winter blasting away all over the country you would not think that painting is on many peoples minds.
Interior painting is actually on many peoples agenda's because during these cold months we see more of the inside of our houses than we would sometimes like.
Paint contractors are usually a bit slower at this time of year, so, consider getting some quotes for any painting you need done. Remember that in the spring everyone suddenly wants a painter and prices are less flexable.

Whats new.

I just used the ' Aura' paint from Benjamin Moore. I really liked the way it covered and adhered to the surface. The colour I used covered really well although I know it's not true with all the colours. The one drawback is the cost but the covering ability of the paint enabled me to only put one coat on some very hard to reach area's, saving the customer lots of money.
So I guess the cost of the paint can definitely be cancelled out by the cost of the painter.
Too many people don't see past the price of the can of paint, I've seen some horrible quality paint come out of some of the big box stores, bought by unsuspecting consumers who didn't take the time to arm themselves with the information needed to make a smart decision.

A new year of new products

When you dip your paintbrush into a can of new "green" paint this year, don't be surprised at how different it might be. With the new regulations and higher cost of raw materials, paint is not what it used to be.
When the paint manufacturers removed the VOC's (volatile organic compounds) it changed how the paint acts and changed how long it will last.
I have found that the new paint dries way too fast, and adhesion is not as good.
Some companies used to mix alkyde or other compounds into their exterior paint to make them stronger and more resistant to weather. Not anymore.
So expect to pay more. Expect to paint more often. Bad news! but we must change, right?

Where is your paint

It's surprising that many home owners don't have more regard for the paint they have left over from painting their homes, both inside and out. Not only is the stuff pricey, it's also very useful if you need to touch up an area later on.
I usually write the date and what I used the paint on, right on top of the can. Then make sure the paint can is sealed properly. This means not putting the heal of your boot in the middle of the lid when closing it, thereby making sure the lid will never seal properly again. Also excess paint build up on the edge of the can will also ensure that it will never seal.
So take care of the small things and the big things will.......... you know the rest.

Low temps and latex

The low temperatures remind me that latex paint will turn to cottage cheese if it's left to freeze.
No it's not edible. If your precious paint is stored in your shed or garage make sure you move it. With paint running at 40 to 70 dollars a 4 litre can, it's worth the effort.
Above freezing is all you need to store the paint until you need it next year.

winterizing your paint supplies.

Storing paint through the winter is best achieved by finding a cool dry place where it doesn't get below 0 degrees (or freezing). Oil based paints are OK in an unheated area, but all waterbased or latex paints will become unusable if allowed to freeze.
I keep my paint in a root cellar which stays at about 5 degrees all year.
Lids must be secured as lose lids will cause your paint to skin and evaporate.
If you find that you have no use for your left over paint, many landfill sites have paint recycling as a part of their service.

We often underestimate the ability of a new paint job to uplift our spirits and change our whole outlook on life.
Colour has a huge impact on our moods and emotions.

It's usually quite wet in the morning because of dew, but the daytime is warm and paint should dry before night fall. I usually stop applying paint before 4.00pm, this allows the paint a couple of hours to dry while it is warm. For more information.................

Painting your exterior in September is still possible but make sure to wait if any surfaces get soaked by rain.
Usually as long as temperatures are above 10 C paint will adhere well.
Stucco is fine to paint even if it's a bit damp, as the moisture actually helps the paint to grab onto the surface.
As always, be careful when on ladders and be aware of electric wires.

Too hot to paint?

Hot weather needs some organization if you plan to paint the outside of your house.
Latex paints dry very quickly if left in the sun ( in minutes), so always keep the roller tray or cutting bucket out of the sun.
ALWAYS KEEP THE LID ON THE PAINT CAN. Removing the stir stick will also save you a possible spill.
Applying the paint can be difficult as the heat is turned up, adding a little water to the paint is a good way to keep it workable.
Start painting early and plan to be on the shady sides of the house.
Finally, during the many drink breaks and lunch, make sure you cover your roller tray and paint brush with either a wet rag or plastic sheeting so your expensive tools will continue to apply paint thru out the project.

Waiting for sun.

If you have wood on the outside of your house, all this rain is making you wonder if you can repaint, or should you wait.
If, like many people you wait a long time between repainting your exterior, any exposed wood will have moisture deep inside it. I like to have two weeks of sun before I repaint bare wood.
Other surfaces like stucco, metal and non absorbant materials should be OK to recoat.

Ladders

I saw a guy on an extension ladder yesterday, but he had the ladder backwards.
The correct way that an extension ladder goes against a wall is with the upper part of the extension on top of the lower part. Also the rungs are designed to allow comfortable foot placement because they are flat on top when the ladder is in this position.

Question of mold.

Here in Kamloops BC, mold is not as big an issue as in Vancouver or other high humidity area's.
For mold to appear and become a problem you need the area to stay damp and have little ventilation.
Just because you have a plumbing or roofing leak , does not mean you will be attacked by black mold.
So the remedies are, stop the source of moisture, dry the area with a fan , wash the surface if any effluesence or surface mold appears. Then when it is completely dry....... reseal and paint it.

Chipping paint

Although we do our best to sand and prepare our surfaces before we paint, they still can chip off with rough use. The only remedy for this is to sand the offending area's again and touch them up. Usually followed by a coat over the whole area so it blends in.

Finishing Fir

We have built our own home and have decked it out with fir everything. Doors, windows, trim, baseboards etc. Knowing that stain can end up blotchy if the grain is less than perfect, I opted for a tinted "Stays Clear" an Benjamin Moore product.
I add some tint (colourant) to the product and apply it directly onto the wood.
If you are a beginner don't do this as the finish will show every overlap and dry edge.
I have found that it gives a great, even overall colour to my wood, with none of the problems you get from stains.

Time to paint the exterior?

It's a bit early to paint anything outside if you live above the 49th paralel. 10 degrees celsius is the minimum the paint companies have on their cans. What you need is two weeks of sunny warm weather before you paint an exterior. You will need to check any exposed wood to see if it is dry. Moisture sits deep in the wood and will lift the paint when the temperatures rise.

Applying a faux finish

When you are dabbing on a glaze over a base colour you can use a rag, cheescloth, or a sponge. The most popular sponge is a natural sea sponge. This is because by rotating it after each dab you can avoid the cat tracks that are the bane of a faux finisher. Also let me ease your mind about glazes; when dabbing on you can use thinned latex paint with no other additives. I start dabbing by keeping my dabs about a foot apart. This will avoid clumping the dabs and allow you to fill in gradually. Also as your sponge runs out of paint the lighter dabs will be spread out. It's the same proccess with rags or other methods of application. Make sure your paint/glaze is thin enough and you will need to mask the trim and corners to prevent the dabbing from getting on surounding surfaces.

Faux Finishing glaze

Glaze is a transparent coating, used to create faux finishing effects.
The correct mix of glaze is the most important part of success. A sample board is a good start. This is used to try your colours and see the result before it gets to the wall. Paint the sample board with the same base colour you are using on your wall.
I'll assume you have bought the Benjamin Moore "Aqua Glaze", although other brands are available. It comes rather thick for most ragging or marbling, and should be thinned with water. Adding colour to the glaze should be done with care.
What kind of product do you use to colour the glaze?
You can use acrylic paint that artists use; it comes in tubes and is good for choosing colours and blending them.
The second way is to have your paint retail store add a little tint using the tinting machine. This requires a good relationship with someone who won't mess up your glaze.
Thirdly, you can purchase little tubes of colourant (not paint) at some paint retail outlets. These are the best because they will give you the most transparent look and are not going to speed the set-up time of your glaze.
There are also kits for faux finishing that have all the products in one package, although these are costly and I have not used them myself.

Faux Finishing Tips

Although faux finishing takes some level of skill, it's doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. I recomend finding some books on faux finishing.

Here are some books to go look for : Paint Magic. The art of faux. Country Paint.

Some big box stores like The Home Depot have faux painting books also.

If you are a complete novice, please read up on the subject first. Start with a small area, maybe a bathroom or closet.

The first thing is to paint the area being faux finished with the base colour. This also should be considered very carefully. The colour you use underneath will transmit through the glazes applied over it. White is a safe start but often a buttery yellow will give a soft glow when other colours are applied.

Faux finishing glazes can be obtained from many paint stores. They tend to dry slower than regular clear acrylic coatings. The old way of preparing glaze is to use Linseed oil and paint thinner. If you do use this method be aware that used Linseed oil rags self ignite when left bunched up. This could ruin your day, and burn down someones house.

Another method of making glaze is to purchase a deep base paint from the paint store without any tint in it. The bases that your colours are made from are quite transparent before the colour is added. Also you can purchase an extender, this helps slow the setup time of the paint.

So there are two types of proccess to consider, dabbing on and dabbing off. The dabbing on is easier because it doesn't matter how fast the

paint dries. The trick is to spread out you efforts all over the wall and not try to perfect one area. This way you will avoid unattractive area's that are uneven and hard to fix.

Dabbing off is removing glaze with a rag after it is applied. This requires slow setting glaze and fast moving painters. Always practice somewhere that doesn't show too much before you attempt a big wall. We always have one person applying the glaze and one frenzied painter dabbing off right behind. The looks are wonderful but the proccess is not that easy. The correct mix of glaze is the most important part of success.

After you have prepared your room for painting you can tackle the task of application in a number of ways. Everyone has their own preferred method. However, most people agree that coverage is important. The number of coats you apply will affect the finish of the room.

Usually two coats of paint is required for a good finish. Alternatively, there is special 'one coat' paint sold in do it yourself stores. It is meant to cover the walls well with just one coat. Once you apply one coat of the paint and it dries, you will get a sense of whether you need more. The finish should be smooth and even, not patchy.

Ceilings, the other wall.

Most new houses have a textured finish on the ceiling. To have a painted ceiling costs more because the drywall and taping have to be that much better. If you are lucky enough to have a smooth finish, it can lend itself to many kinds of decorative finishes.

Anybody can paint?

Yesterday I was reviewing the You Tube videos on how to paint a wall or room.
It was not a pretty site. From the Australian one that has a guy on the top step of a ladder holding a full roller tray of paint like a pizza delivery guy.
Then the painter using a three quarter inch pile roller sleeve (250mil). The correct roller sleeve pile is 10 mil for interior walls by the way. Any longer and you get a very rough looking texture on the wall. The other bad one showed all the trim taped with masking tape. He must have shares in 3M.
There are some OK ones and here is a link. Although don't listen to the no dropsheet part, use one or you will get paint on your floor.
Back rolling is also important, and is missed by many painting videos, probably because they don't know about it. Back rolling.
Also, using a roller tray to load your roller is OK and better than a five gallon bucket for most home owners. The final tip is try to avoid getting paint on the axle of the roller cage as you reload the roller. This will drip both on the floor as you lift the loaded roller up and down the wall as you paint. Raised plaster.

I started to do raised plaster finishes a few years ago. The technique is fairly straight forward.
The idea is to produce images that are raised off the surface of the wall. This link shows a mural that is painted with raised plaster trees.
I use oiled stencil board to cut out the images. The board is then taped to the wall and plaster is applied over the board so the image if left behind when the board is removed.
I make a custom plaster but you can use regular household filler.

After becoming part of the rich culture of the Greek and Roman Empires, trompe l'oeil art all but disappeared during the Dark Ages, not to resurface until the Renaissance and Baroque eras. After the discovery of perspective in the fifteenth-century, the trompe l'oeil style in mural painting flourished. Trompe l'oeil artists used these techniques in perspective to create false openings like doors and windows. In Europe this form of three dimensional art on a two-dimensional surface was used extensively by the wealthy and clergy. Churches and grand cathedrals became a common place for trompe l'oeil paintings to be used, giving these houses of worship the appropriate splendor they deserved. If you have the feeling that art is a waste of money and time, then you may have company.
I mean, they just released a movie made by chimpazee's. I think I must have worked on a few of those during my film career.
Ever since people could scrape and paint images in caves ten thousand years ago, art has had a very important part in our cultural development. Art help's us cummunicate our feelings and thoughts in a direct and immediate way. Like all things human we have many people who hide within art's labarynth, and pretend at being something they are not. Don't let these unfortunates distract you from the positive affect artist's have in our society. Graffitti might be annoying but sometimes it is really good, and like it or not, it is an art form. There are so many types of artistic expression that are out of reach to many of us. Some artist's don't appeal to me at all.
I am not ashamed to be very critical if I don't like what I see, but that's a part of it. So strive to be open minded, but don't be ashamed to critique what you see.

Faux finish fun

Faux Finish comes of course from french, meaning "false", it really is about making something appear to be something else. Take a wall that is half inch drywall and put a few coats of paint and glaze on it and you have marble, old plaster, copper, wood, or stone.
Once the methods are learnt they are fairly straight forward.
It's like the old fable about a king wanting to learn to paint. He goes to see a tutor and asks to be taught. The teacher says" OK, but first you must learn to dance, so he goes to see a dance teacher and the teacher says "OK, but first you must learn music. And so on.
Well good Faux finishing is a bit like that. You have to have a good knowledge of paint and glaze. Also an art background is very useful, and the basic painting skills enabling you to apply the various coatings evenly and quickly without drips and misses.
It's just another learnt skill, so why not start now?

There are some very well known muralists around the world.
In North America Eric Grohe has made a huge impact with his architectual mural works.
Many students will paint a mural, but this is a risky propersition as experience is a great advantage in this field.
Aside from the actual painting, knowledge of paint and the performance of different types of primers are essentential if the masterpiece is to last more than a couple of years.
Eric Grohe's painting is done with a German mineral paint that hardens over time.
The whale muralist Wyland uses epoxy primers to help his wonderful freehand whale murals.

If you like it, it's a mural. If you hate it, graffitti. There is some great graffitti out there, and I don't mean those pesky tags. Kamloops BC is, unfortunately not a mural town. I have worked hard trying to encourage murals but they have a built in aversion to anything arty thats not in a gallery or very temporary.
So all of my mural work here is interior, although I would love to paint Kamloops into the twenty first century, with some eye catching, beautiful images.

Painting Murals.

Because I have spent twenty five years in the film industry, painting murals became a regular occurance in my life. I've worked with great muralists and not so great ones. Some are good at very large projects and some, smaller works.

One important thing that I learnt was that whoever wants a mural would like to see what they are getting before it's completed.

I took a coarse on Photoshop at Quantlen College and that was an excellent way to convey to my clients a visual representation

of my work before it is complete. Submit an idea to me, and I will give you an idea of how to turn it into a beautiful image that fits into you space.

The first consideration is light source. If your mural is in a hallway or away from natural light then you must consider your lighting arrangements. Even opposite a window you may need additional light to show the mural at night .

The light source is also of prime importance when painting the mural. Unless it's an abstract work with no need for an apparent light source. Any landscape, still life, figure or street sceen needs it's own apparent lighting. I usually have the painting lit from where ever the actual light is coming from, so as to not conflict with it.

Surface preparation must be done carefully. Fill, sand and prime with a top quality primer. Also be aware of your roller texture and/or brush marks to make sure they are compatible with the painting.

I spend a lot of time researching a mural before it is painted. The best painting style is wasted if the composition is wrong.

Placement of the mural and the position of the images with the mural are best delt with by drawing them out first and using whatever means you are comfortable with. I use photoshop, as it really help to convey to the client what they are going to see before the mural is painted. It's a lot easier to change before the hours have been spent painting the mural.

Colour mixing is a skill and without any art training it takes some raw talent and a do it anyway attitude.

My advice is to paint on a sample board first to warm up and discover the intereaction of you colours.

Using chalk or pencil is also a good way to put the image on the surface and see how it fits. If it is a complicated scene, and if you have a digital projector, than projecting the image and drawing it out from the projection is the best way to do the lay out. A thin mix of raw umber and a small brush is an excellent way to quickly sketch out the image.
After the surface is ready then the image has to be placed on the wall. The old way to do this was by way of a grid, a small grid on the orinal image and a large grid drawn on the area to be painted. This is useful if there is not enough space to use a digital projector, which, saves lots of time and places the image right where you need it. Use pencil or calk for this step and be loose with your style, try not to be rigid.
Once that is done then you can start blocking in the main colours. This is just putting in the background colours such as sky and buildings, or fields and mountains.

So you have an idea about what you want to paint on your wall but what kind of paint should you use?
You can use your regular interior house paint but that depends on what type of image you are intending.
If it's a abstract shape or group of shapes and lines, then use a similar paint with the same sheen as the walls.
If you are painting a mural which has perspective and several planes (see art info) then I generally use a flat paint and protect the painting later with a flat glaze.(Stays Clear)
Cloverdale Paints has access to scenic paint, which is used in the film industry. This dries flat and comes in 4 liter containers. It is the best way to paint large area's which need lots of paint.

Faux Finishes

My theory is that faux finishing falls out of favour everytime it comes into style because so many so called professionals are so bad at it. I have seen faux finishes that would make you groan in disbelief. Any time you combine colours together you need to know how they will work together.
Also dabbing on different colours one after the other is hardly faux finishing.
The subtle glow you can achieve with ragged off glazes are not easy and without a thorough knowledge of glazing, impossible. Latex based paint dries very quickly. Latex based glaze dries even quicker. So getting it off before it sets becomes a very big obsticle to that perfect finish. Also, tinting glazes is a very tricky thing and takes many years to master.
So faux finishing will come and go, but good faux finishing will always give you astounding looks and beautiful surfaces.

The main reason people don't have more art in their homes is that it's not all that easy to find a competant artist who has experience painting murals. Also the cost is a major factor in not having anything but the basic paint on your walls. Considering a mural really says that you have confidence in your own taste and enough income to think about surrounding yourself with beautiful, meanful images.
Now if your in business it's a whole different ballgame. Murals are a very good communication tool between you and your customers. They can inspire, encourage, or relax people. Many companies have used murals successfully to grow their customer base and sell exciting new products.

The world of filler.

When painting or just fixing your home, you will eventually come across a hole that needs to be patched. All fillers are not created equal however. Many companies have tried to make the perfect filling compound but still the most convenient is good old Redy Filla. It's really just the stuff that drywallers use and is good for most jobs.
If you need to fill a bigger hole a powdered patching compound is what you want. Often referred to as Fast Set (the most common brand). Because it chemically sets up, the patch won't shrink and fall out as will the Redy filla.
My favourite is Polyfilla, because you can buy it in smaller boxes and it is a reliable way to fix dings, cracks, and holes.
One tip, don't put water in a container and mix it, put a little on a board and gently add water. Why? because it's very hard to guage the amount if you add powder to water. Don't make it too runny and use it with in 10 minutes otherwise it will set up and be useless.

Everything is green,but?

From lime kilns in Cornwall 2 centuries ago, to the latest low VOC paints coming onto the market in 2010. We, as a species may well be inclined to slap ourselves on the collective backs for a job well done.
Before we get too excited, remember that water soluble products are contributing to contaminated water supplies world wide. The paint industry, to which I must also belong, is not really taking the lead in this rush to be green. It is grudgingly being pushed to adopt new rules that it wished would not be there.
We, (that's you and me), are a force that CAN change the way all industries produce products. We only have to demand change and it will happen. The problem there is that we are so used to cheap, we don't really care about the cost to the evironment. How much do you know about the paint you put on your walls? Is it full of fungucides? what are VOC's? can my children lick the paint?
Individually we do care, but together we are as careless as a herd of buffalo's running over a cliff.
So consumers, educate yourselves about the products you buy, it's your responsibility, and your duty to your children and grandchildren.

Clear finishes

Varnish is the first thing that comes to most peoples mind when I mention a clear finish.
With the new regulations coming into affect this year, water borne finishes are becoming the only choice. As with latex paint, the problem is that the open time (working time) is short, and these water thinned products don't bring out the look of the grain as well as their oil based cousins.
Benjamin Moore has a product called 'Stays Clear" an interior clear coating that is by far the best for interior finishing. Flecto has an interior Urethane for wood and floors that is also very good.
When applying these you must work fast and make sure you brush them out in both directions before laying them off. If you add colour contact me for more help before starting.

Wallpaper paste

Wallpaper paste comes in a few varieties. The premixed paste can be cellulose, or clay based.
I like the clear vinyl paste which works for most applications.
I know most wallpapers are prepasted, but if you choose an expensive wallpaper, then it will likely be unpasted. Hence this little blog. In the film industry we used wheat paste for many scenic applications but it is hard to find, hard to mix, and is prone to mold.

How to apply wallpaper

Those video's over on the left are random samples from Youtube, there is no way I can recomend or critique them, so watch at your own risk.
Wallpaper goes in and out of style. In 2010 it is gaining ground again.
Every wallpaper can have different installation instructions. Read them carefully.
I have been hanging wallpaper since I was sixteen, and still I read the instructions.
With the expensive custom wallpapers, I suggest having an experienced tradesperson do it. This though is easier said than done. How do do find someone who really can do it properly?
The supplier should have a list, but since it's been in decline for a few years people who have lots of experience are rare.
Tomorrow I am going to install wallpaper for a customer, I will video the process and post it, as writing the process down won't really help you here.

Removing wallpaper

So you have a room(s) with ugly wallpaper and it has to come off.
Sometimes you can find a corner that's lifted and pull the top layer off. This will help speed up the proccess.
You will need; some old towels, a bucket and sponge, a scraper (it has a flat blade like a filling knife but stiff),you can use an old filling knife also. You'll need a paint roller and tray and an old paint brush.
Place the towels up against the bottom of the wall to prevent pools of water.
Put hot water in the bucket, then pour some in the tray and begin rolling the water onto the wallpaper.
Tip; only roll upwards, otherwise the water will run down the wall. Use the brush to wet the edges where the roller can't reach.
Now leave it for 10 minutes then go back and wet the area again.
It might soak in quickly or it might take several wettings, but eventually the water will loosen the paste that sticks the paper to the wall. Only when it comes off easily, start the scraping process.
When you have removed all the wallpaper you need to wash off the paste residue, (all of it).
If you don't do the last step the paint you apply will be rough and will tend to crack and possibly fall off.
One last thing, the old wet wallpaper is slick and if allowed to dry, sticks to everything, so pick it up immediately and put it in a garbage bag.

Painting baseboards and stairs

When you are confronted with having to brush down to your precious carpet, there are a couple of things you should know.
Make sure you have vacuumed where they carpet meets the baseboard.
Buy a12" drywall knife or an edger tool, which is between 12" and 36" and is specifically for this task.
With your cutting can and brush ready, make sure you have a damp rag close by and a drop sheet on the carpet. The drop sheet should stop about 2" from the baseboard.
Now push the blade of the drywall knife to depress the carpet and protect it. The blade of the drywall knife should be just under or against the bottom of the baseboard. Next carefully cut in the baseboard.
Don't feel as though you can just slop paint on the blade of the drywall knife, as this will increase the risk of get some on your carpet.
If you do get paint on the carpet, dab it off and add more water if necessary, try not to rub as this can discolour the carpet. Don't continue until the paint is completely gone from the carpet.
Wipe the blade of the drywall knife with every move.
Don't over load your brush, this will avoid drips.

Paint selection

Choosing paint for your home painting project is an important step.
Except for a few Alkyd paint diehards (sorry folks), Latex paint is what you will use.
Avoid really cheap no name products, cheap paint is cheap paint!
Eggshell finish refers to the sheen of the paint and not the colour.
Usually, eggshell is used everywhere including bathrooms and kitchen.
However, rooms where moisture can be a problem, use semi gloss or pearl, the latter has a sheen between semi gloss and eggshell.
There are some good washable flat finishes in the high end paints. These are good for Faux Finishes and some living area's.
Quality is important. The top of the line products are worth the money because you get a better looking job, and also last longer.
Benjamin Moore is a favourite of mine, I also use Cloverdale Paint, and General Paint.
Benjamin Moore has a great reputation and their top of the line paints perform very well.

New year resolutions.

When you decide that a repaint is in order this year, the first thing to do is write down a plan.
Putting pen to paper always helps to put things in perspective.
Which area's are you going to paint? What are your colour choices?
Do you have area's that a professional may have to deal with, such as, ceilings, or high walls in the foyer?
Do you have the experience to paint the trim without producing a disaster? The 5 P's from the US navy are good to keep in mind whatever you do.
Prior planning prevents poor paint jobs.

Who do you listen to?

I just looked at You Tube video's about painting. I wanted to know who was talking about, and showing the howto's on this subject. Well the first one was not good, it included a guy on a ladder with a roller tray full of paint balanced on his hand like a Pizza, painting around the top of the wall cutting in the ceiling.
Also we saw no roller extension pole and a wacky technique for rolling the wall.
It goes to show that they don't know what they aught to know when explaining a painting technique.
The next one was better, so there are some video's to watch on this subject.
The thing is how do you know what to watch? I promise to give you the best idea's on painting.

A new year with new paint

As 2010 rolls in new regulations take affect to regulate the paint retail business.
The paint companies have started to roll out their lines of green paint, namely paint with low VOC's (volatile organic compounds).
These paints have a much shorter open time (working time) and really are still at a stage where improvement is needed. Some of the immediate things painters notice is the way these paints will clog up brushes and will dry on your roll if you don't cover it when you go for coffee.
A small spritzer is a good thing to keep around, I often spray my roller tray if I'm leaving it for more than a few minutes. Also I keep a roll of cling film to wrap my brush at lunch time and put some across my roller tray to prevent that thin skin from forming and later transfered to the wall.
The new paints are a result of legislation in California that trickles around to the rest of us some time later. I personally liked the alkyde modified exterior paints that Benjamin Moore made for decades, and will be sad to see them go.
I've got news for you folks, 100% acrylic is not all it's cracked up to be, acrylic softens in water and is not as good as their modified cousins.

A trade secret to keep.

Knowledge of any subject takes some research and study. If you intend to do some large painting project in your home and can't find a painter you can trust or can't afford our rates, then arm yourself with knowledge about painting.
Getting the consumer to paint their own homes has been encouraged by retailers for about three decades now. There are good profits in selling paint at full retail, and the consumer doesn't have the knowledge that a professional has.
My advice is to go online and order a book or two. "Paint Magic" is a good start, it goes over all aspects of faux finishing and painting. "The art of faux" would be for the more advanced student of painting.

Method for painting doors

Painting flush panel doors is a simple job, but here are the steps. Cover the floor with a drop cloth or news paper. I like a piece of thin cardboard especially if there is carpet on the floor.
Remove the door hardware (door handle) and keep them to one side. Sand the surface of the door with a 120 to 220 grit sand paper or a med/fine sanding sponge,(use the fine side).
Wipe the door down with a damp rag and inspect for any imperfections that you may have to fix.
Open the paint, pour it into a roller tray and use a 7 inch roller with a 6 mm sleeve. These smaller rollers are much easier to handle than the 9 inch wall rollers and are great for doors.
Using your sash brush, paint the edge of the door that belongs to the side you are painting.
If the door opens away from you, it's the hinge edge, if it opens towards you, it's the edge with the handle and latch. After you have brushed the edge, go around to the back of the door and wipe off any extra paint that may have crept around on the other face. Now dip the roller and roll the surface. With a flat door you should be able to leave the surface as a roller finish, if you decide to brush it out you will need to work VERY fast especially with the new paints. Brush vertically and be careful to keep the strokes straight and not get drips off the top edge of the door.

Visualization is a skill

To see a project completed in your (minds eye) or imagination seems to be something some people can do easily and some struggle with. I've even seen famous designers who have to draw what they need to do. Drawing though is a great way to convey what the conceived idea is going to look like. Imagination is where it starts, but communicating it is the first and vital step if other people are going to understand the concept. Without communication you are on your own.
Some designers borrow from magazines or other media, others work at being original.
The main thing for me is for understand what the customers tastes are and how far they can stretch to accept new idea's. The greatest concept will die if presented to the wrong client.
Also presentation is important. I've had projects die because somebody tried a presentation over the phone. Never assume the client sees what you see. Have good visual references and clear imagery for them to look at.

Trade Secrets are not secrets.

You have figured out by now that trade secrets are a list of practical suggestions that have been proven over time. It's all basic stuff, but many people miss the basics, thinking the secrets are more complicated.
Here's a note about dark colours. Oddly enough some dark colours cover other colours quite well. While some are like transparent glaze. This is because the paint that is in the can before the colour (tint) is put in by the machine IS transparent. So what do you do?.
Some companies recommend a coloured base coat, use it. The old paints used to require a dark grey under their colours, this also will help, but what ever you do, try a little as a sample before committing to the whole wall. It will save you a lot of grief.

Basic steps

Just like the Karate Kid who wanted to be a master in the sport, painting is really about the basics. If I had a dollar for how many people who told me "I can paint", I'd be living in a castle.
Yesterday I went to see a small painting job that included 6 doors and frames that were painted with the highest gloss paint I have seen. Before I paint them I will need to sand them to a flat appearance, otherwise you could pull the new paint off with your thumbnail after a month.
To avoid dust I will use automotive emery paper, this is used with water, (usually a wet rag) and works really fast and efficiently. The grit should be 150 or 180, even 220 would be OK. Wipe the surface after you've finished sanding and voila. A good quality semi gloss or eggshell latex will be used to repaint these doors and frames.

Painting tip. Colour and you

Colour choice is a personal thing of course. I don't buy it that men can't choose colour. Usually it's a lack of will more than anything. Always choose a colour in the room you are going to paint. If in doubt, get a large sample and keep it in your space and look at it at different times of the day.
I mean if you are going with a beige or off white you can just paint. But colour choice can be an important part of the process so don't rush it or be thinking of other things. Key off other coloured items in the room and rely on your own feelings of what the colour does for you.

Washing/wrapping paint brushes

I have noticed that wrapping a paint brush in that cooking cling film, can have nasty results if left too long. Especially with the new low voc paints, who's open time (working time) is really short. Anyway washing at the end of the day is still the best option. Floating them in a bucket or paint can will expand the wooden wedge and cause the brush to lose it's shape and ability to be used as a cutting tool.

Trade secret # 9

Here's one painting problem that many people are confused about.
Can you paint latex over previously painted oil paint?
Usually the oil paint has been on the surface for a few years, so the answer here is yes.
Here is the condition. If it's a high gloss finish then you MUST sand every part of the surface so it takes off all the gloss. Then wipe it down to remove the dust and paint away.
If it's old alkyd paint on the walls, sand and paint. Sometimes it might require washing with TSP.
If it's fairly new oil paint then you have a problem. There are some paints you can find that will remedy this, but sanding is still the key.

Trade secret # 8 Painting a ceiling

Usually you should ask a professional painter with experience painting ceilings to give you a quote. If your ceiling is textured or not they are not easy to paint.
Most should be painted with a flat latex, although kitchens and bathrooms can be finished in eggshell or even semigloss.
There are some good washable flat latex paints on the market also.

Trade secret # 7. Glazes

OK, some of you were wondering, does this guy know anything about anything more than the basics? But people, the basics ARE the secret. OK, here is some info about glazes.
A glaze is a transparent coating applied over a surface. It can be an oil or combination of oils thinners, and color. Or, it can be an acrylic clear coating with some color in it.
The oil based glazes are an old traditional way of creating beautiful affects used by the old masters. Faux finishers use them to scumble or make thousands of great looks in their trade.
The film business uses glazes extensively for anything from marbling, to woodgraining.
Making glazes is for painters with advanced knowledge and experience, but they can be purchased in paint stores. But be aware that you will not have a good experience unless you have some knowledge about what to do with these transparent coatings. The most challenging part is how much tint to put in the glaze, too little and you don't get the effect, too much and you have to start again. Contact me for more info on this.

Here is a seemingly unnoticed practice that I have found common even with professional painters.
When you have finished painting for the day, CLEAN THE ROLLER TRAY with brush if you are not using a tray liner, and make sure there are no globs of paint left in the corners so the tray can properly dry overnight, and be ready for the next days painting.

One of the things I am asked about is brush technique. How do you get a straight line up by the ceiling and not get paint every where? First, look on the trade secrets page number 2 and I discuss some of this when talking about painting. When you hold the brush up to the wall just below the ceiling, the brush needs to be perpendicular to the wall, don't have the handle pointing in the direction you are pulling the brush. Next, push the bristles against the wall and ease the paint up to just below the line where the ceiling connects to the wall. Try cutting a line one eighth of an inch below where you want it, that way you will be less inclined to push paint up onto the ceiling, (Something we all want to avoid). Also, if you find yourself using just the tip of the bristles to cut in, it's virtually impossible to make a straight line. Again push the brush again the surface and use just edge of the bristles to form the line.

Washing brushes after use. If your brush is not getting dried lumps on the side of the bristles after a day of painting you can avoid washing the brush by carefully wrapping the bristles with a cling film used for cooking or a piece of thin (1 mm) plastic sheet used for covering furniture. Be careful to push out the air bubbles, then put the brush in a cool place until the next day.
If you need to wash the brush do it thoroughly, until no more discoloured water is coming from the bristles. I usually dab the brush against the bottom of the sink with the tap running.
Spin the brush in you hands until the bristles are damp, then smooth out the bristles as the brush will conform to the shape you leave it in. Lay it on a rag and you're done.

Caulking

There are lots of types of caulk , which has an elastic characteristic. The tubes that require a caulking gun, and the smaller hand squeezed ones. For painting always buy the paintable latex caulk. The 100% silicon caulks cannot be painted and will cause whoever comes later to paint your handy work a lot of grief.
Apply caulk by cutting a small amount off the end of the tube,then with a steady stroke squeeze the caulk into all the area's between door casing, windows etc that are separating. (Some scraping maybe required before this step.) Then, with a damp rag draw your finger along the caulk to wipe off the excess. If you have a mound of caulk on the rag you are applying too much. Rinse the rag often and remember you cannot sand away the excess later so remove all the excess caulk.

Choosing a colour for your home.
Just remember that paint is only paint and can be redone if you don't like what you chose.
Now you can buy little jars of your colour before you have to make your purchase. Try it to see if it's going to work. Benjamin Moore has them, and some of the other paint stores too.
Choose the colour in the room that's going to be painted, every room has it's own light qualities.
Take into consideration the other colours in the room and furniture also.
An eggshell finish is the usual choice but there are some good washable flat paints.

Oil paint to latex/a rock and a polluted place

Well I must say the new rules on paint are welcome, but I still have a rant, as a professional of course. 2010 stores will NOT be able to stock alkyd (oil) based paint. I hate the smell of oil paint but it's soooo.. nice to have time to work with it when painting murals or faux finishing. Even just slapping a coat on the wall it flows out nicely and guess what?, after you finish you usually dispose of the roller and wash out the brush in paint thinner and let that thinner stand in an old can and then reuse it for washing the next brush. Fast forward to the future, which is now.
Latex is water soluble and loaded with chemicals unheard of 20 years ago. Although we are assured the new latex is low in VOC's, ummm , now the paint is dry before you have a chance to scratch your nose, and , try faux finishes with this stuff, even with the extenders they sell separately. Then we are ready to clean up. Wash the brush and roller in the sink and watch all those chemicals go into the sea, ummm very smart.
Are we creating a bigger monster? I for one have decided to dispose of my rollers after the job instead of trying to wash them. I do put them in a 5 gallon bucket and see if I can reuse them but wash them? not.

Trade secret tip # two

On my website I have mentioned how to buy the correct filling knife. The flexible ones are filling knives, the stiff ones are used for scraping. A 2" and a 4" knife will be all you should need for regular work around the home. Use the two knives together, one to hold the mud, the other to apply it .
A ready made filler like Redifiller is OK for picture hook holes and little dents around your home. Bigger holes sometimes require a filler that is mixed before you apply it. The advantage is that the filler will set and be ready to sand before the premix variety and for bigger holes it won't shrink as much.
DON'T over fill. Press the filler into the hole and then draw the knife across the hole and remove all the filler thats not hiding in the hole. If it shrinks, fill it again. This one technique saves hours of dusty sanding and subsequent clean up.

trade secrets are not what people expect. The most basic habits are the things that make the difference. Where you place your tools can have a huge impact on your jobsite. For instance putting your paint can in or near a doorway can have unwelcome outcomes. If someone treads in your rollertray is it their fault or yours for having it in the way?
